Choose the Right Heating System

The first step to replacing your heating system is to determine what capacity you need. We can perform a heat load analysis to determine what your heater output needs to be.

Our formula takes into account cubic square feet, doors, windows, insulation levels, type of insulation, and much more. We’ll determine how many BTUs, British Thermal Units, which are the standard unit of heat measurement, your home requires to be comfortable.

You don’t want to get a heater that is too small to heat your home adequately, but you also don’t want one that is too large. Oversized heaters are often forced into short-cycling processes, causing them to turn on and off frequently in short periods, which puts a lot of strain on the components and shortens their lifespan.

Next, the type of heating system needs to be chosen. There are electric and gas furnaces, ductless mini-splits, air heat pumps, and geothermal heat pumps.

Which Type of Heating System Should I Choose?

There are several types of heating systems with different pros and cons. Here are some of the most popular options in Louisiana:

  • Electric Furnaces: These furnaces are convenient when you don’t have access to natural gas. They can heat your home and are very reliable.
  • Natural Gas Furnaces: Natural gas furnaces are more energy efficient and cheaper to operate than electric furnaces. They offer great value for a relatively low initial cost, assuming you already have gas piping installed.
  • Oil Furnaces: These furnaces aren’t nearly as popular as they once were, but they still have some attractive features. They heat large spaces evenly and produce less emissions than natural gas furnaces. There is no risk of carbon monoxide leaks either. They do require a sizeable on-site oil storage for fuel, as well as regular oil deliveries. Oil is more expensive than natural gas and has the lowest energy efficiency for its energy source, making it less popular than many other modern options.
    • Air Heat Pumps: Heat pumps utilize the pressurization of refrigerants to pull heat out of the air and transfer it where needed. They replace both your heater and your AC, making them an efficient system. The initial cost is high, but the operating cost is very low.
    • Ductless Mini-Splits: These systems operate on the same principle as a heat pump but utilize units in different rooms or zones. They are great if the house doesn’t have central air vents installed and operate very efficiently.
  • Geothermal Heat Pumps: Similar to air heat pumps, geothermal heat pumps pull heat out of the ground. Once you reach about six feet in depth, the temperatures of the ground are remarkably stable year-round, which makes these heat pumps even more efficient and reliable than air heat pumps. Geothermal heat pumps are perhaps the most expensive to install initially. However, they offer extremely impressive energy efficiency. Most of the installation and equipment have much longer lifespans than other heating options, with an average of up to 50 years! The low operating cost and the longevity of the system allow homeowners to recuperate their initial investment.

We’ll be glad to walk you through all the pros and cons of each of these types of heating systems to determine the one best suited for your needs. Call us for furnace and heat pump replacements in Baton Rouge
